Internet of Things
The Internet of Things (IOT) is a working concept that describes the connectivity between and among electronic devices. IoT assumes the capability of machines to communicate with each other. Think of IOT as a network of networks that monitors, collects data and shares
information between such devices and a system platform. This can include a wide range of devices and physical objects. Hence, the word things. Such examples include:
• Smart refrigerators
• House and business smart thermostats
• House and security monitors
• Energy management
• Health and fitness devices
• Automobile collision avoidance systems
• Self-driving vehicles
• Heart rate monitors
IOT functions as a type of information ecosystem which contain
built-in sensors and communication hardware that are connected to a system platform. The job of the system platform is to integrate the various data inputs and apply analytics to address specific
user needs.
Home Security Systems
Consider, for example, the functioning of a home security system. Nearly all security systems are now wireless and many also double as part of a smart home automation system. The primary goal of a home security system is to protect the safety and security of a home as well as the people inside it. Such threats to safety and security can come in many forms such as a burglary, home invasion, fire, flood, or other environmental disaster. Most home security systems can monitor for these various types of intrusions. A home security system uses a combination of sensors that communicate over radio frequencies or wires to a central hub, which then communicates with the outside world using a cellular telephone connection
or landline. The hub is generally a touch screen mounted to the home owner's wall or placed on a countertop. The sensors are strategically located throughout a person's home; specifically at doorways and first floor windows as well as hallways and high-traffic areas. These
sensors detect when a door or window is opened or closed, when someone is moving inside a home or both. When the system is triggered, it sends an alert to the hub which then sounds
an alarm as well as sending a text notification to the user's smartphone. It also sends a signal to a home security monitoring center.
